South Island reviews

Whatarora Hotel
If you want an authentic experience, stay here. We stayed here in our campervan at the back of the hotel/pub one very wet night. There are also hotel rooms available which other weary and wet travellers had already taken. The pub filled up fast with the locals, men, women and children. It had a great atmosphere and the owner was friendly and welcoming, even kindly checking if we wanted a cuppa in the morning. For a reasonable cost, he let us use the bathrooms. I would highly recommend staying here rather than the tourist places in the glaciar village. It was one of the few places where you can get to meet the locals.

Makarora Tourist Centre
We stayed in a campervan overnight. It was a really beautiful spot in the mountains to stay at. Kitchen facilities were good and well stocked with equipment. Shower cubicles a bit small but adequate. Restaurant nearby is a good option if you don’t want to cook

Queenstown: 12 Mile Delta Campground

Very basic campsite with only pit toilets and some running water which was undrinkable. So not sure what you pay for here though management kindly discounted our cost for the two of us in a campervan after we told her of our bad experience with a hotel. What you do stay here for though is the stunning view! Watch the Milky Way slowly appear above the lake and inbetween the mountains. Beautiful!

Stayed December 2014, travelled as a couple

Thank you for your feedback. Our facilities are very basic (but well maintained), which allows us to provide affordable camping in a stunning location so close to Queenstown. Our tap water all natural, and as a precaution we recommend boiling the water incase any bacteria have entered the water stream along it’s journey. For those that prefer, we offer bottled water at a very low price. We understand that a more natural camping experience isn’t for everyone and are always happy to recommend campgrounds that offer a kitchen, hot showers, WiFi or whatever suits your needs.
